Chuck Fudger hung out with Bob O’Connor, Dick Shirley, Ronnie Sullivan, Al Thrasher and the other weight lifters.

Judy dated Dick Shirley for 1.5 years, until the beginning of his senior year. At that time Coach Hoover dictated that no football players could have

girlfriends so they broke up. Dick was serious about what he hoped would be a football career.

But he couldn’t make it into the big schools. He tried playing at a junior college with an eye towards Ohio State but injuries ruined his career. He returned

to Vestal and married Chris Vail.

I was sorry to hear about Dick. I remember that he had a head injury -- maybe a concussion -- in football, and was so determined to play that the school

had a special helmet made up for him. At least that's what I remember.

the last time I saw him was right around graduation. He and his girl (was it Chris?) showed me her engagement ring. He was really proud of it. He was the

first member of our class that I can recall getting engaged,

and I remember being stunned at how certain he was of what he wanted to do.

Dick, as I remember him, was a very sensitive, kind of shy guy who tried to make up for his shyness by being a funny guy...he was loyal to his friends, and

if you were his enemy, well...just get out of his way!  But he really had few if any enemies,

just an all around nice guy and super athlete, esp. on the football field.  We'll all miss him.

Dick Shirley was also very active, almost hyper.
