Candy remembers Nov 22, 1963. When that moment was crystallized in her mind, she was sitting in study hall, maybe the cafeteria, talking with Bob

Campbell. She learned not only that Pres. Kennedy had been shot, but that Bob was a regular all around

nice guy.

Candy remembers being good friends with Jackie Taylor, Donna Wing, Judy Gouldin, Averile Clarke among others.

Both Averile Clark and Candy went to Harper and were in Folk Dance together.

Candy fondly remembers Craig Ingraham. He was someone who was always there, from the early grades on… and a regular on the bus with her.

Candy's love was Tom Wade, though he may not have always known it. Candy, who was at Ohio Wesleyan at that time, drove  to Oberlin (with Donna

Wing?) to see Tom. She later heard that he was engaged and wished she could have attended his wedding

(wasn't invited)… but then again, maybe not. She hopes Tom is doing well in his life. He's on our missing list.

On Jimmy Krestalude's first kiss in third grade. She's honored and reading that made her day. Jimmy is also one of the guys who were always there from

the early days.

Candy had one date with Barry Ilse. They were supposed to go to a movie, but the line was too long. So they went to a Laundromat to have a coke. Later

Barry took her home to watch TV. Barry fell asleep and Candy had to ask Barry's parents to take her

home.

Candy remembers Mike Johnson as a very much ladies' man. She went steady with Mike for a few months as a junior. She says Mike was her "ticket" to

the court of the Junior Prom (p. 82 of the yearbook). When they broke up, her depression worried her

parents because she lost so much weight. They sent her to the countryside to live with her Aunt for a few weeks. Auntie and her chicken dumplings got

her over her broken heart.

Candy was supposed to go to the Senior Prom with Tom Havens. However, since Tom was a wrestler with a match that night, Candy had to go by herself.

That's Candy near the punch bowl in the non-prom dress that her mother made on page 85 of the

yearbook. Candy wasn't the only one. Laura Crandall or maybe Judy Halter also had wrestler dates. Candy thinks the match did end in time for the guys to

attend the prom.

In 4th Grade Esther Tiel was "Carrot Top". Candy was "Cabbage Head". Her middle name is Romaine. Some little boy came to school one day telling

everyone that his mom said Romaine was a kind of cabbage.

Hi! After having ignored everyone (outside of family) I had known in my pre-Utah days for c. 30 yrs., I became really curious about all my class/life mates a

couple of weeks ago after having attended my husband's highshool reunion. What a great time

I'm having today looking through your web site! Thanks so much for all your efforts!

I have spent the last 27 years in Utah, mostly in Salt Lake City, married in '76 and we have two sons: Frederic, 21 and Arthur, 19. Both are in the process of

moving back in with the folks and will begin their college careers at the end of August.

(And we had just begun really enjoying having the house to ourselves again!)

Currently work as Insurance/Risk Mgr. for the Episcopal Church in Utah and am back in school taking all the math and science I didn't take for my BA in

Art History and graduate work in Architecture.

It is especially interesting that several of the people I have been curious about have already responded to the site. Would particularly like to know more

about Jimmy Haley, Tommy Wade, Donna Wing. Well, lots of people!!

Hey, I also have no idea how I was ever chosen to give a graduation speech - I'll bet lots of people had that question after I gave it!

More later....maybe even a pic.

Reading Candy Vanderlips chat on the database shakes cobb webs loose, George Starner, Candy Vanderlip was friends with Bil Shanley. Bill Shanley had

a big family I'll bet someone is still in the Vestal area.

Was close to Candy while at Vestal and wonders what may have happened to her. She was not at the 1990 reunion. Thinks that early on after Vestal,

Candy was in Colorado.

Agreed with Candy van. about Mr. Corwin:  I still have the elemental table memorized and learned to do

the impossible, love chemistry.

Candy was the first girl I dated seriously after moving to Vestal in my junior year. She was a very intelligent, caring person. She also was

quite self-confident, our little soap opera notwithstanding.

She's probably right about her dates' mothers lobbying for her. My mother certainly did. My father, too. He was a chemist, and approved of her interest in

chemistry. He might also have noticed that she was good looking.

We ran across each other a couple of times when I was at Harpur, and then we lost track. I think the class still owes her money from the magazine drive we

had when we were seniors. She was supposed to get her weight in nickels, I think, and I don't

remember paying up.

Oh, by the way, Candy Vanderlip was my first date and my first kiss.  I think it was in 3rd grade at the 3rd grade dance at Clayton Avenue School.

Candy Vanderlip was one of Craig Ingrahams ladies.  He still has a little crush on her.  Probably like mine on Ann McCarty.

Saw Candy on the way back from Lake Tahoe on the 5th of August. Met MIke and had dinner with them. Candy and I just squealed and hugged each

other for about 5 minutes straight! It was GREAT!

Of all the people we've talked about, she was the closest to me in the early years-but after we graduated, we just

picked up where we left off - I went to see her one winter weekend when I was going to SUNY Potsdam and she

was attending Ohio Wesleyan University in Ohio. Had a great tome at a fraternity weekend in Cincinnati!! Haven't been back

since! Yuk Yuk!

It would be truly super if we could get Candy to come to Denver for our mini-reunion - she could certainly stay with me - and we would all have a great

time I'm sure!!

Mr. LaForce was a FORCE in our social studies class, especially with government! A lot of us - Roger Hartman, Jackie Taylor, Sheryl Frank, Craig Ingrahm,

Candy Vanderlip, Larry Cahill (some of us will remember the infamous Richard Sileo and others

Candy Vanderlip Bull and Donna had a great telephone reunion last month. They were good friends at Vestal. We hope to get Candy out here sometime.

She can stay with Donna and we'll have a mini reunion in Denver.

Talked with Candy on July 16 by telephone.

Candy and husband, Mike, have been in Utah since the early '70s. They live in Salt Lake. Prior to her taking residence in Utah, Candy had never been west

of Ohio.

In 1987, Candy was diagnosed with MS. She now has the disease under control with the help of medication and a strong, positive attitude.

Part of this attitude can be seen in her determination to become to acquire a pharmacy degree. Candy? The Art, Art History, Architecture major will be

dispensing our blood pressure, heart pills and Prozac medication in the future!

Candy was never one to sit still. She's motivated. Candy thinks it's being "self absorbed" and feels a little guilty that she may have neglected her boys

because of it. I think they're proud of their mom with her new mission!

Candy acquired a distaste of biology early on, 9th grade. The teacher turned her off to the subject with his rote memorization requirement for the students.

Now she's found out biology is loads of fun. In this case Vestal, or a Vestal teacher,

motivated Candy in the wrong direction.

But another teacher redeemed Vestal. Mr. Corwin inspired Candy in chemistry. She feels that her ability to really dig into the organic chemistry she's taking

today has its roots in Mr. Corwin's classes. "He also encouraged me to play the flute," she

says, "I guess he wasn't impressed with my chemistry!!"

After Vestal Candy was interested in a career in geology, but was discouraged by her professor who told her women had no chance in the field. That was

the 60's. So the degree in Art and Art History.

Presently Candy works part time for the Episcopal church in insurance, property and risk management.

At Vestal, Candy felt on  the fringe. If she made it into groups, it was because of luck and her ability to just quietly slip in.

Candy says she was always "Parent's Pick". She was the one parents always wanted for their sons, but the sons weren't so sure. Parents would lobby for

Candy, but such interference never really worked out.

We conjectured what might have happened had my Aunt finagled with the Vanderlips to "arrange" a Candy/Rich get together. I wish Auntie had. I really

liked Candy… from afar.  I was too shy to even approach her then. But I think we would have been

great friends had circumstances worked us together.

When I asked her what word described 1965 for her she said "On the brink" How true. 1965 was the transition year from the serenity and moody blues of

the 50's to the wacky and intense 60's

Candy was the lead off speaker at commencement. She was a brain with a very warm smile.

Although I didn't graduate from Vestal HS '65 (I attended Seton HS, class of ''65), I knew most of the kids in the class.  I lived across the

street from Candy Vanderlip and a few houses down from Larry Cahill.
